the only thing i found really consistent with this is that romney has been essentially hating on half of the country for almost two years. i didn't necessarily find his comments out of line with everything else he has talked b. we've been characterizing them as gaffes. i've been trying to say this is who he really is. he really believes half the country is a bunch of moochers. i think what's really interesting, if you strip away all the areas, the urban areas that's predominantly minority, right? he still lost a whole bunch of white people, too. the man is refusing to take personal responsibility, which is the height of irony when you think about what he went around and talked about with 47% of the people not being personally responsible for their own lives. here he lost an election, mostly because of the fact that he was a bad option. the gop knows he was a bad option. that's why they fought him so hard during the primary, because he was a bad choice. but they ended up with him, they reluctantly had to get behind him. and what you're seeing now are the chickens coming home to roost.

it's interesting, too, in the days following that he stopped -- mitt romney stopped talking about it. i think that is a reflection of the fact that it was an issue that wasn't working for him. and that might be a cautionary tale for the republicans who are pursuing this today. >> i think he stopped talking about it after the debate when he was called out on it. john, we have the president in thailand today asked about reaching a deal to avoid the fiscal cliff. here's what he said about that. >> i'm confident that we can get our fiscal situation dealt. it's important to recognize that, yeah, democracy is a little messier than alternative systems of government. but that's because democracy allows everyone to have a voice. >> you know, to both of you actually the president is looking at a draft of this deal after the thanksgiving break. how realistic is that john and then amy? >> i'm not sure how quickly after thanksgiving there will be a deal but leaders were talking in an couraging way about getting a framework agreement before christmas and the end of the year that would outline where

i campaigned for governor romney and was for him and disappointed when he didn't win. i'm going to take issue with the perception that people who are poor want to be. and people getting government benefits want to stay there. in my experience as a person who didn't start out on the high end of the economic spectrum on the other end as a pastor for 12 years then as a governor who worked 10 1/2 years and saw more than half the people get off of welfare rolls on to a payroll, people in this country, deep down want to work. they want dignity, responsibility. the idea that people are just delighted to be on a government handout, indicates you must not know too many of the people that i have known. sometimes people give up and they don't think there's any way out of hole. they may resign themselves the only way to survive is through government subsidies and handouts, not because they want to be there. republicans need to be able to talk to the fact of people's real dreams and hopes, which is not to be on government dependent programs but rather to be independent on their own
